Why I Don’t Give Advice as a Doula

As a doula, my role is to support and empower you, not to tell you what to do. You might wonder why I don’t give advice, and here’s why: every family is different, and my role is to help you trust your own instincts and make decisions that feel right for you. However, I do have my own personal beliefs and biases—specifically, I believe in the value of natural, physiological birth. Let me explain how this fits into my approach.

1. Everyone is Unique

There’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to birth or parenting. Instead of telling you what “should” happen, I guide you in exploring your options so you can make decisions that fit your needs and values. While I have a preference for natural birth, I’m here to support your choices, whether or not they align with mine.

2. My Role is to Support, Not Direct

I’m here to offer information, answer questions, and give emotional support—not to make decisions for you. You’re the expert on your own body, baby, and family. My role is to help you feel confident in the choices you make, and I never want to impose my views on you.

3. Empowering You Through Knowledge

I believe that knowledge is power. I provide you with evidence-based information to help you make informed decisions. My personal bias is toward natural, physiological birth, but I’m always upfront about that so you can decide if it resonates with you. My goal is to support you in finding what works best for your family.

4. Trusting Your Intuition

Parenting and birth are filled with uncertainty, but I believe you already have the wisdom within you. I encourage you to trust your instincts. By not giving advice, I help you explore and decide what feels right, whether it aligns with my biases or not.

5. Reducing the Pressure

There’s a lot of pressure to do things the “right” way. But there’s no perfect answer—just what works for you. I’m here to help reduce that pressure and encourage you to feel confident, even if things don’t go as planned.

In the end…

I don’t give advice because I want to empower you to trust yourself. While I’m open about my own biases toward natural birth, my role is to support you in your journey, not to dictate it.

I want to leave you feeling confident in your choices, so you feel you can handle whatever comes your way with strength, peace and alignment.
